Heard It In A Past Life | Sophie Calderón
Thank you to my past lives, for all of the living that brought me here.
To my past self - this is the light you worked so hard to find.
To my future self - remember this as the time you were on fire and you loved the way it burned.
During this time of isolation, I believe everyone has learned to practice the simple yet complex art of gratitude. In these moments we realize how good it felt to hug someone, we try to understand how we fell asleep in one world and woke up in another, and we try to remember that the perfect way to show someone that you love them is to keep distance.
As I dug through my record collection, I came across my all time favorite: Maggie Rogers “Heard it in a Past Life”. Through twelve tracks, I remember how important it is to fall in love with life, to fall in love with people, to get lost in experiences, and to simply be present.
This time in isolation quickly turned from a period of realizing all of the things that I cannot do to all of the things I have been forgetting to do.
I suddenly remember how good the sun feels on my face, how releasing it can be to dance in the rain, how lost I get in books, how nostalgic I feel with music, how loved I feel by my family, how good the earth feels under my feet, and lastly, how to breathe.
In this album, I found the answers.
My life has slowed down at a record breaking pace and in this time I am reminded to look inward. This album reminds me to be vulnerable when finding all of the pieces that make up who I am, to love the simple fact that I am still here and that I am still going, to let go loudly and to walk off the old me, to do my dance unapologetically, and when the time comes to reenter this world I’ll come as the truest version of myself there has ever been because there is going to be a whole new world out there just waiting for me.
So I challenge you during this time to press play.
Get lost in the idea that you are only just beginning.
Start the rest of your life eagerly.
Be grateful for the little moments that let you know you’re alive.
Remember the path you’ve walked to get here
And look forward to the road that will come.
Taste good food, Listen to good music.
And when the time comes, hug those you love, but never forget the little things you learned to love during this time - including yourself.
“And to my friends new and old, who shepherded me through this giant change & who are so vividly woven into all the stories this record tells” - Maggie Rogers
